Githubify is back
Almost eleven years after its launch, Githubify, my small service for tagging GitHub repos, has been rewritten from scratch on a modern stack and works again.
I created Githubify in December 2015 to keep a large number of repos in order: your own repos, forks, repos you are a member of and starred ones can all get tags. In February 2017 GitHub introduced topics, which do much the same thing, and the project lost its relevance. Over time it also quietly broke: login through the legacy Firebase SDK 2.x stopped working, and the gulp 3 build no longer ran on modern Node. Still, I wanted to keep it in working order as a memento.
So the app has been rebuilt:
- Vite instead of gulp and browserify
- React 19 function components and hooks instead of
createClass, mixins and Reflux stores - React Router, with filters kept in the URL using the same parameters as before, so old shared links still work
- the modular Firebase v12 SDK with GitHub login. The data stays where it was, so existing tags are still in place
Along the way the site got a new tag logo and favicon, a social preview card, a reworked login page with a short history note, author info in the footer and a fixed mobile layout for the share icons and filters. The header logo now leads to the home page, where signed-in users get a “Go to my tags” button. Google Analytics and the long-gone Google+ share button were removed.
I made this update together with Claude Code.
